Nari Gunjan- Artreach India Teaching Fellowship at Prerna School, Bihar.
From January to March 2017, artists Anni Kumari, and Tyga Helme led a 6 week funded residential programme at Nari Gunjan, Bihar. Prerna is an all-girls residential school established by Nari Gunjan for children of the Musahar community. The schools provides quality education to the girls and also removes them from daily conditions of extreme poverty, gruelling hard labour and child marriage.
The programme, as a first small step, was aimed at encouraging an interest and aptitude int he arts towards a possible livelihood. Towards this they were given a firm foundation in art education. The artists introduced stories in Hindi & English to start a visual conversation with the students. They made studies of objects from their living space such as foliage, plants , flowers, fruits etc. They also experimented with making books of different kinds-accordion, pop-up and spiral. The students were introduced to colour, tone, and composition. This resulted in the students making lively collages and beautiful paintings.
The artists also conducted workshops at community centres.
